What a ski really costs to run
The loan repayment is only one line in the budget. Here is the rest.
Financing a ski without pricing the ownership costs is how a fun purchase turns into a stressful one. Use this as a checklist, and get actual quotes for your own situation. We have deliberately not put dollar figures on these, because costs vary a lot by model, state and where you live.
The ownership checklist
| Cost | How often | How to find your number |
|---|---|---|
| Loan repayments | Weekly, fortnightly or monthly | Use a repayment calculator, then add a buffer |
| Registration and licensing | Annual or multi-year | Check your state or territory marine authority |
| Insurance | Annual or monthly | Request quotes and read the product disclosure statement |
| Fuel and oil | Per ride | Ask the dealer or owners about typical consumption for the model |
| Servicing | By hours or yearly | Check the manufacturer's service schedule and get a workshop quote |
| Storage and parking | Ongoing | Home garage, shed, or a paid storage yard or marina |
| Trailer upkeep | Yearly | Bearings, tyres, lights and rego if applicable |
| Towing and launching | Per trip | Fuel for the tow vehicle, ramp fees where charged |
| Safety gear | Upfront, then replace | Lifejackets, lanyard, fire extinguisher and communications where required |
| Freshwater flush and care | After each salt-water ride | Hose, cleaners and a bit of time |
Turn it into a ride-day cost
Add up your yearly ownership costs (everything except the purchase itself), then divide by the number of times you realistically expect to ride. If the cost per outing surprises you, that does not mean you should not buy. It means you have decided with your eyes open.
The seasonal factor
If you only ride in the warmer months, your loan, insurance and registration keep running through winter. That is worth a thought when choosing between a shorter term with higher repayments and a longer term with lower repayments. A longer term usually means paying more interest overall.
Build the budget properly

Do not forget the tow vehicle
Check that your car can legally and safely tow the ski and trailer combined. Look at the towing capacity and the trailer's loaded weight. The trailer and ski together are heavier than most people expect.
